Our client produces high-quality joinery products, focusing on wall panelling with a hardwood Oak surface. These panels are machined with a reed profile, either convex or concave, using the advanced Morbidelli M100 5-axis pod and rail CNC router. However, despite achieving quality craftsmanship, the company faced challenges in maintaining an excellent surface finish while increasing material throughput. The existing tooling was also producing excessive noise, creating an uncomfortable working environment.
To address these challenges, Unilap designed and manufactured a bespoke PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) Profile Block specifically tailored to the customer’s requirements. The tool was crafted with a minimum diameter of 140mm, while maintaining a strict weight limit of 6kg for the entire assembly. This bespoke design not only improved the surface finish quality, delivering exceptional results for wall panelling, but also increased material throughput by enabling faster feed speeds, reducing the time needed to produce each item.
Additionally, the tool's aerodynamic shape was designed to minimise noise during machining, significantly enhancing the working environment by reducing noise levels. The tool was mounted with an HSK63 interface and finish eroded and balanced as a single unit, ensuring maximum concentricity, which resulted in a major increase in tool life, reducing the need for frequent replacements and lowering operational costs.
